16 Fantastic Ways To Use Peppermint Essential Oil
And This Is A Short List…
- Muscle Pain Relief: Peppermint Essential Oil is a very effective natural painkiller and muscle relaxant. It’s especially helpful in soothing back pain and sore muscles. We love using it to get rid of tension headaches. Studies have shown that Peppermint Oil applied topically has pain relief benefits associated with Fibromyalgia. It’s one of the nine Oils that we use in Raindrop Therapy Treatment.
- Sinus Issues: Inhaling diffused Peppermint Oil is amazing to help clear sinuses and help with sore and scratchy throats. My best friend was suffering from a chronic cough after having surgery and the one thing that helped soothe it and finally get rid of it, was using Peppermint Essential Oil, both topically and through Diffusing. It’s awesome for relief of colds, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.
- Sore Joints: When your joints get achy, applying a few drops of Peppermint Oil mixed with feels great and smells amazing!
- Natural Energy Boost: Instead of putting those toxic energy drinks into your body, try a healthy option by taking a few whiffs of Peppermint. Plus it’s great to help perk you up on long road trips, in school or any other time you need to “burning the candle at both ends.” Feeling “foggy” and can’t concentrate… using Peppermint will help with better focus and concentration. When I’m working those extra long days, there’s nothing like rubbing a bit of Peppermint on the back of my neck and belly area to feel energized.
- Allergy Relief: Peppermint Oil is super effective at relaxing muscles in your nasal passages and can help clear out the muck and pollen during allergy season. Diffusing Peppermint (along with Clove, Eucalyptus, and Thieves Essential Oil) is a must-have during this time of year for allergy sufferers.
- Anti-Itch: Works well to relieve rash or poison ivy, applying a few drops of Peppermint Oil mixed with Lavender Oil is a great combo to use.
- Reduces Fever Naturally: When my grandchildren get fevers, we mix a few drops of Peppermint with Coconut Oil and then rub it on their feet, back, and back of their neck… works like a charm every time for kids of all ages!
- Acne Treatment: Medical studies are showing that one of the best Peppermint Oil uses is to help get rid of acne. It’s got anti-microbial properties, which is an excellent ingredient for facial/acne use. I also love using Oregano Essential Oil for acne.
- Headache Be Gone: Peppermint Oil has the ability to improve circulation, heal the gut and relax tense muscles. All of these conditions can also cause tension headaches or even migraines. Peppermint Oil is an excellent natural treatment. A study from researchers at the Neurological Clinic at the University of Kiel, Germany, found that a combination of oils, including Peppermint Oil had “significant analgesic effect with a reduction in sensitivity to headaches.” The oils were applied to the forehead and temples for pain relief. This is something that I use in my own personal life, and it works wonders.
- IBS Treatment: Peppermint Oil taken internally in capsule form has been proven to be effective at naturally treating IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). One study found a 50% reduction in IBS symptoms with 75% of patients who used it.
- Improve Bloating and Indigestion: Peppermint Oil is a terrific natural alternative for bloating and indigestion. It works by relaxing the muscles of your intestines, which can also reduce bloating and gas. Try adding 1 drop of Peppermint Oil to your water before meals.
- Freshen Breath and Reduce Cavities: Tried and true for well over 1,000 years Peppermint has been used to naturally freshen breath. According to studies, Peppermint Oil had better results than the mouthwash chemicals chlorhexidine at reducing cavities. I love using Peppermint as my mouthwash (I alternate between Peppermint and Clove), which keeps my breath naturally fresh, and my mouth-feeling super clean!
- Reduces Nausea: A medical study found that Peppermint Oil uses reduced nausea that is induced by chemotherapy better than standard medical treatments. Simply adding a drop of peppermint oil to water, or rubbing 1-2 drops behind your ears, or even diffusing it can help to reduce nausea.
- Respiratory Benefits: Peppermint Essential Oil has the ability to open your airways and act as a decongestant. I also love mixing it with Coconut Oil and Eucalyptus Oil as a homemade (and natural and safe) vapour rub. Great for symptoms of bronchitis and asthma.
- Cancer Treatment: Clinical research indicates that peppermint contains the compound menthol, which inhibits prostate cancer growth. Also, studies found peppermint protects against radiation-induced DNA damage and cell death.
- Stress Buster: Like so many other of the amazing Essential Oils, Peppermint helps with stress, depression and mental exhaustion. Many of my clients love using it for feelings of restlessness and anxiety.
Peppermint Oil To Repel Bugs
And because Mosquitos seem to love me… Peppermint Oil is definitely a favourite of mine to repel bugs!
A study that was published out of Israel compared how 7 different commercial bug repellants fared against each other. As you’d expect it, the All-Natural Essential Oil Mosquito Repellent (which is a blend of cinnamon, eugenol, geranium, peppermint, and lemongrass oils) was tied as the most effective mosquito repellant with OFF!® (which is loaded with toxic chemicals like DEET). A further study showed that peppermint oil resulted in 150 minutes of complete protection time against mosquitos, with just 0.1 mL of oil applied on the arms. The researchers noted that after 150 minutes, the efficacy of peppermint oil decreased, and needed to be reapplied.

P.S. I’m not a medical doctor. I believe in, and am passionate about helping people live a better, healthier and happier life. This blog post isn’t at all intended to diagnose, cure or prevent disease. The information that I’m sharing is from my own personal use, and results are different and vary for everyone.
Using Essential Oils is not a cure-all or magic bullet. A healthy balanced body is the results of a well-rounded program of exercise and proper diet. Health is everything we do, say, hear, see and eat. Essential Oils are only one tool to help restore balance in the body that will result in good health. Healthy eating habits and a positive, open mind will help prepare the body and skin to accept the oils better and more rapidly.
